Character Name: Kiritsugu Emiya
Age: 29
Canon: Fate/Zero
Canon Point: Episode 24, during his dialogue with Angra Mainyu
Character History: Kiritsugu on the Type Moon wiki.
Canon Abilities: What is your character capable of doing in canon?
Sharpshooting - Kiritsugu has been trained from a young age how to use guns and projectiles to great effect. He has an eye for detail and precision, rarely missing a target.
Hypnotic Suggestion - Essentially, a "Jedi Mind Trick." This is a very basic skill in magecraft, allowing him to influence the thoughts and actions of a target by focusing his magical energy on their eyes.
Magical Familiars - Kiritsugu is capable of creating familiars by transplanting something containing his magical circuits (ex. his blood or hair) into an animal (in canon, this comes in the form of bats) so that the creature can form a spiritual bond with him, and would be considered an extension of himself. At that point, it would be able to understand human language, and perform simple tasks (such as if Kiritsugu were to equip a video camera, it could collect footage for him, or if he wanted it to carry and deliver a small package to a friend.) Otherwise, it would look and act like a normal animal.
Time Alter - Per his family's bloodline, he can access the Time Alter ability to manipulate time relative to his own body. In canon, he uses this to both propel himself at high speeds, and slow down the rhythms of his body to evade detection.
Severing and binding origin - In Fate/, everyone is born with an origin, though few are aware of what theirs is. Unfortunately, Kiritsugu is one of the few painfully aware of his own. The given example in canon is "to cut and tie," indicating an irreversible change. This manifests in several ways: though Kiritsugu can fix normal, everyday items, working with delicate machinery will explode hilariously in his face. Conversely, he has learned how to use this when fighting against mages. With his origin bullets, his origin will manifest within his targets, causing their magic circuits to rearrange in way that makes them totally unusable. This also affects people who spend extended time with him, albeit, to a lesser extent. Kiritsugu has a habit of finding people with subdued personalities, and in his company, they become more of a person. Though how much of a person they become is debatable.
Origin bullets - Related to the above, Kiritsugu uses a special type of bullets in tandem with his gun, the Thompson Contender. These were crafted by powdering his own ribs, and using them as gunpowder inside of a special type of bullet he uses to hunt mages. His origin will then manifest within a target, and cause their magic circuits to go haywire.
Inventory: Walther WA 2000 - A gun.
Thompson Contender - A different gun.
Avalon - The sheath of Excalibur. Magically, he has this embedded inside of his chest. This gives him healing and regenerative powers.
A pack of cigarettes - Self-explanatory.
🦋 Personality
Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.
- Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?
For Kiritsugu, magic is not only a way of life, but a world he was born into. As a starry eyed child, Kiritsugu aspired to use his magecraft to become a hero so that he could help and defend others. This is something that he carried, even into his adulthood. However, after witnessing an accident involving his father's research that caused his entire island village to be turned into undead apostles, his relationship with magecraft began to radically shift.
He began to view mages a selfish beings, who valued the advancement of their craft above anything else. He eschews the society that would allow tragedies such as the one he witnessed as a child to be swept under the rug so much that he committed himself to the lifestyle of a mage hunter, and spent much of his teenage years traveling the world to eliminate fugitive mages. Moreover, he despises that many in magus society look down on modern technology, opting to use his own in tandem with his magecraft to deadly results. His mantra is to only use magecraft for others, but never for himself.
- If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
His wish would be the same the one he pursued throughout the run of the Holy Grail War: an end to human suffering in the world. This is largely due in part to the violence he experienced throughout his life. As a child who lost his entire home in a single night. As a teenager wandering from battlefield to battlefield in a futile pursuit to put an end all violence. And as a doting father, who wants to prevent his daughter from being groomed as a sacrificial lamb for the Einzberns.
This is something he craves to an almost myopic degree. Kiritsugu treats saving lives as though he's solved a math equation. Willing to kill one person to save ten in a heartbeat, often prioritizing the greatest number of lives saved. This is something Angra Mainyu taunts him over. That despite his best intentions, he treats saving life as a game of numbers, even if this means sacrificing a loved one.
- If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
To Kiritsugu, his wife Irisviel and his daughter Illyasviel, are more precious to him than anything else. After all, becoming a husband and father is the first thing that makes him consider abandoning the Grail (and by extension, his wish) altogether. At Irisviel's insistence, he doesn't. But there are moments where he confesses to her that he feels he made the wrong decision. Family life is something he gets fulfillment out of, and the first time since childhood he's found any kind of happiness.
This becomes a point of deep regret, especially following the discovery of the Grail's corruption, when Angra Mainyu shows him visions of his wife and child, as the life he could have had. If he had a second chance, and could do over his mistake, he'd run away from the Einzberns with Iri and Illya in tow in a heartbeat. Which is to say, if either one of them were to tempt him into another dimension, he'd do it without a second thought.
- What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
I feel like, more than anything, Kiritsugu is defined by his deep sense of empathy. Though he is often single-minded when it comes to his goals, he is described as someone endlessly shaken by the suffering of others, and that he looks as his loved ones "as though he were in mourning." This is especially true whenever he is required to make a sacrifice, being shown to break down into tears moments after pulling the trigger.
He will forever feel burdened by his sacrifice and regret. Killing his father, Natalia, and his wife's sacrifice to turn into the Grail, resurface as visions while he's inside his grail. Forced to relive the weight of his decisions over, and over. It's not until he saves Shirou from the Fuyuki fire that he feels as though he's truly able to "save" someone, implanting the sheath of Avalon into the boy's chest to aid him into a speedy recovery, giving up the very thing that would have saved him from Angra Mainyu's curse of "All the World's Evil." Deep down, he's always been an altruistic person, even if it's not something he'd admit to.
